| OOC Info: Moniker: Amanda/Dreamer How did you find out about us?: I got an email invite from Kat
Character Info: Name: Jadrek
Pronunciation: Jah-drek
Title: Candidate (former Weyrbrat)
Honourific: N/A
Age & Turn of Birth: 15, 486
Gender: Male
Place of Birth: Fort Weyr
Current Place of Residence: Fort Weyr
Craft: N/A
Rank/Occupation/Role Desired: Candidate, Aspires to be a Dragonrider
Character Aspirations: Desires to be part of something (many things, even), and currently daydreams about being part of a Wing. He would also enjoy being part of a relationship and being a father, but neither of those are really conscious aspirations
OOC Character Development Goals: Jadrek is pretty lonely, and would love to be a part of something. I’d like him to form relationships (friendships, etc), but I’d also be willing to explore what happens when an impressionable teen gets caught up in matters beyond him. As in, if anyone wants to use Jadrek for their own means, I would love to explore that. I’d also love it if he Impressed, but that’s, of course, up to the Moderators.
Family: (Give their name, age/year of birth, rank and signify if they are deceased.) ✣Father: J’arren, 53(448), Bluerider ✣Mother: Dreana, 46, (455), Weyrstaff ✣Siblings: Anayr, Half-Sister, 22 (479), Weyrstaff, specializing in Tithe management Dana, Half-Sister, 20 (481), Weyrstaff (Archivist-in-training) Reton, Half-Brother, 7 (494), Weyrbrat ✣Children: N/A ✣Other Significant: Thanekar, 14 (487) Candidate, Best Friend
Appearance: ✣Face: Chaz Washington
✣Hair: Brown. It’s curly, and he shapes it just a little bit. He keeps it short (a bit longer on the top of his head, but very short on the sides). Sometimes he hates his hair (and hates how big it gets when he grows it out), but his mom thinks it’s cute. ✣Eyes: Big brown eyes. They aren’t really windows to his soul- his whole face isn’t that expressive, but they are rich in color, and at some point someone will probably describe them as “warm as klah” ✣Height: He’s about five ten at this point, but will probably grow another four inches. ✣Build: Jadrek is all arms and legs at this point. He’s small because he’s young- but he takes after his father who is a large, imposing man. Jadrek will never be a body builder, but he’s no lean Runner either. Given the demands of Dragonriding, if Jadrek Impresses, he’ll probably be a tall, thickly muscular man. ✣Other Notable Physical Traits: Jadrek tends towards stillness. This is intentional. After all, if he doesn’t move, his sisters won’t be able to spot him. ✣Style of Dress: Jedrak is a Weyrman, born and bred, so he wears what he’s given by the laundry staff. Generally it’s loose fitting, fairly warm trousers and long sleeve shirts. He likes bright colors, but he’s no Wingleader who can purchase his own, personal clothing, so everything tends to be in darker hues that don’t fade (or stain). His boots are made of nice leather, and have colored laces (bright red) that his mother purchased for him when he became a candidate. At this point (three turns later), they are a browned red, but he still values the laces greatly. Jadrek owns no jewelry, but had he the marks to purchase jewelry probably would. ✣Possessions usually found on persona: Jadrek probably should carry certain things around (a beltknife for instance) but he doesn’t. First of all, he never leaves the Weyr. Ever. He’s never even gone to Fort Hold for a Gather. Second of all, why would he carry things around when it makes so much more sense to always go and get a specialized object for whatever task he’s trying to accomplish? Third (and least important) Jadrek doesn’t really like having things in his pockets.
History:
Jadrek isn’t exactly unusual. He’s a Weyrbred boy, with several half siblings, whose mother expects a little more from him than she gets, and who’s sisters might enjoy tormenting him a little more than they should, and a little brother that he likes to ignore. He has a best friend, and one day he’ll probably Impress a dragon of some sort (maybe a blue or something?).
His mother, Dreana, had been in a fairly stable relationship with her daughter’s father (a Journeyman crafter) but when he was reassigned to a Hold, she chose not to go with him. Shortly after the breakup, Deana had a fling with Jadrek’s father, J’arren, resulting in her pregnancy. Soon after Jadrek’s birth, J’arren and Deana broke up (amicabliy) and J’arren went back to having affairs with Holder women (Jadrek probably has quite a few other half siblings, but out of sight, out of mind).
Jadrek was raised mostly by his mother, (and his two sisters, but he doesn’t like to admit that) and eventually by his little brother’s father, Renon. And his mother had very specific ideas on how to raise children.
Dreana had been an ambitious youngster who was convinced that she would Impress gold and rule the Weyr as a benevolent dictator. That, naturally, did not occur, but Dreana never outgrew the notion that she was meant to lead people. And thus, with her children, she made sure that they would get the best that they could, and that they would not miss out on their chances to shine.
This worked for both Anayr and Dana who both knew, from a very young age, exactly what they wanted to do. Anayr will one day be the Headwoman, and Dana will be the head Archivist in the Weyr (And only Fort Weyr, which has the oldest, and most precious archives on Pern). At least, this is true if Dreana has her way.
Unfortunately for Dreana, her son was not like his sisters. Jedrek wasn’t sure what he wanted to be, one day wanting to be a Holder, the next a Guardsman, the day after a sailor or a Harper or a different kind of crafter or- well, for Jadrek, the possibilities were endless. Endless, and rather terrifying.
Jadrek wasn’t ready to make a choice, and his mother kept on his case (offering to send him to various Crafthalls, noting she had an uncle who had his own Cothold), wanting him to commit to one thing. And when it became obvious that Jadrek needed to pick something to get his mother to leave him alone, Jadrek picked Dragonrider.
After all, he was Weyrborn, and his father was a Bluerider, so it was possible that he’d Impress, and even if he didn’t, it meant that he didn’t have to decide what he wanted to do with his life until he was twenty. So, at the tender age of eight, Jadrek stopped talking about all of the things he was interested in, and started proclaiming that he was going to grow up to be a Dragonrider. His mother accepted it (even started telling him stories about how his paternal family had been Weyrleaders and Wingleaders in Igen before the Weyr fell apart, and how maybe one day he could be one too), and that was that.
And if sometimes he snuck out of lessons or chores or anything else to help the crafters and holders and wanderers unload their wares and tithes so that he could ask them about their lives and jobs, well, only Anayr knew about that, and she only hassled him about it when his mother wasn’t around.
Jadrek, having grown up in Fort Weyr, knows most people who live there, (by reputation and on sight, mostly), but the weyrborn boy isn’t exactly a social butterfly. He has several friends (okay, he has several aquantecies, and the three people he interacts with most are his two sisters, and his best friend Thanedar), but he tends to be a little standoffish with people he doesn’t know. As for how he came to claim Thanedar (who likes people, and spends time with people, and has lots of friends, and probably doesn’t even consider Jadrek his best friend) as his best friend- well, that’s a story you’ll have to get from someone else. Jadrek certainly won’t tell you.
When he turned twelve, he immidately moved into the Candidate barrarks, and he enjoys the relative freedom that comes from having no real reputation as a Weyrbrat, and no longer living with parents.
He’s been there three turns now, but Jadrek is okay with that. He’s still not sure that he wants to be a Dragonrider, and besides, this way he can continue to explore his other options.
Personality: It’s not that Jadrek is shy.
He even likes people (well, certain people). It’s just that he doesn’t relate to most of the people he’s met. And people tend to assume things about him, and most people who grew up in the Weyr know him through his sisters, and think it’s okay to treat him the way that his sisters do (in fact, some people think it’s okay to call him Dek or Jad just because Anayr and Dana do) and it’s not okay.
So, it’s not that he’s shy. It’s just that he doesn’t seek people out. At least not people his own age- sometimes, if he hears that a new crafter or trader or holder are at the Weyr he’ll find a way to talk to them (or hang around them and evesdrop- he’s not picky).
Jadrek is kind of quiet, and makes a point of being calm and collected. He enjoys the freedom that being thought of as responsible gives him (or the invisiblity, he’s not really sure which one it is).
He knows that a lot of people think of him as being dull, which he doesn’t like, but he’s not exactly sure how to combat the belief without more effort than he’s willing to put into his public persona.
Sometimes he’s kind of sullen, and he can be sarcastic and rather rude, but Jadrek isn’t much worse than the average teen boy. He rarely gets into fights (though he did break the nose of Dana’s last lover- getting himself a black eye and a sprained wrist in the process), and attempts to be responsible.
He’s rarely the smartest man in the room, but he did (and continues to do) well in his lessons.
Shortcomings: Jadrek doesn’t always read social cues correctly. He’s also the kind of guy who could insult a girl when trying to pay her a compliment, or get into a fight over a joke. He’s not socially inept- well, not all of the time.
Jadrek lacks a drive (at least right now). He’s interested in a hundred things, but rather than find out if he’s good at them, he just sort of daydreams about them. He’d love to travel, but never takes any of the opportunities he has to go anywhere.
Mannerisms or Habits: When Jadrek was younger, he learned to be quiet, and still to avoid his mother’s attention and demands. Anayr and Dana are both fast talking, loud and gregarious, and he learned to let them take the spotlight and avoid it himself. It’s not a habit he’s ever trained himself out of.
Jadrek has a tendancy to get caught up in daydreams, or whatever thoughts wander into his head.
Jadrek also slouches a little bit.
Skills/Likes: ✣[Skill/Like 1]: Jadrek has excellent spatial awareness, and good visual memory. It’s probably the only reason Anayr lets him skip lessons and help her when tithes come in. He remembers what items go where, and how much space remains in each of the areas. It also makes him very good at finding hiding spots. ✣[Skill/Like 2]: Possibly as a result of his good visual awareness, Jadrek is a very talented dancer. He doesn’t quite have the strength or speed for some of the partner dances, but given a few turns of practice (and games of Firestone toss), he’ll probably be one of the better dancers in the Weyr.
Dislikes/Unskillful at: ✣[Dislike/Unskillful at 1]: Jadrek hates cooking. It’s one of the few chores he never does, because he can barely boil water competently (he’s the kind of person who will forget the water has to come to a rolling boil, and start when the water has just started to bubble). It’s not that he can’t do detail oriented things, it’s just that he can’t bring himself to care. ✣[Dislike/Unskillful at 2]: Tunnelsnakes frighten Jadrek. He doesn’t admit to it, and does his best to avoid emptying traps or working anywhere that Tunnelsnakes might be. No one has called him out on his fear, so he assumes that no one knows.
Fighting Style/Weapon of Choice:
Fists. He’s not really talented at fighting, but he’s not afraid to get into a fight. Candidate Information: Standing Only? No
Color Preference:
Green, Blue, Brown, Bronze. | |
