| S'jiro was just as surprised when the collision brought water down on his fiance; but because she'd already expressed some displeasure at the drudge, he didn't want to make things worse or create even more of a scene, so he withheld comments.
That said, S'jiro quickly took his cloth napkin in hand to try to help dry her, but Indylari was already standing from her chair to go change -at least that's what he assumed she would do. She was too wet, and would probably get chilled, if she stayed in that dress. Which was unfortunate, because the gown was lovely on her. At the same time, he knew Indylari had no shortage of fine gowns to wear.
Standing as Indylari did, then, he stopped her before she could go. He was at least going to try to be courteous and noble toward her; the Bronzerider thought it was something she would appreciate, and that it might show that he was trying to act in a more exemplary way with her than previously.
"Would you like for me to escort you, so that you can change?" | |

| Was this his way of getting into her room, while she undressed? She wondered at his motivation. He would outwardly seem to be acting chivalrously but she knew how his mind worked. She also knew how she looked in this dress. He would have a hard time controlling himself especially seeing as he never had to before. He could be with any woman he wanted and she wouldn't say no but Indylari could afford to make him wait, he wasn't going anywhere.
"No, thank you S'jiro. I would not want to spoil the evening for you. I'll not be too long." She said, determined to walk herself back to her room alone. Besides, he would have time to talk to his friends before she required him to dance with her.
Now she need only dry off and find something else to wear. The latter being the more time consuming. They all knew Indylari well enough to know that it would probably take her forever to decide on a second outfit to wear and she would want to freshen up entirely if she was going back to her room. She knew the value of looking one's best. | |

| N'kai
Jezefine, who was still with him, wasn't the jealous type as long as Bluerider N'kai gave in to her seductive charms periodically -which he always did, so it was with every lack of inhibition that N'kai welcomed Veyani's warm hug.
The Bluerider did find himself a little surprised though, that Veyani had thought to hug him. He wasn't used to that kind of reception of his work; but any good reception would do. Especially coming from a pretty young blonde like herself. So, N'kai found himself grinning pleasantly at her expression and her words of gratification.
"Well, if I don't say so myself, the dress is quite becoming of you." And it had been created with Veyani specifically in mind, so that had to count for something. He'd wait on reminding her the favour she owed him for setting her up with such a fine dress in the first place.
"Have you eaten yet?" Of course, N'kai and Jezefine had been mingling and sipping on drinks, so hadn't had the chance yet to find themselves a place to sit and enjoy the food -though places to sit were becoming more sparse with every passing minute. The Gather Hall was certainly getting to be full.
S'jiro
Of course Indylari would say that she didn't want him to go with her. He'd been hoping that she might -if not to show in some way that she was trying to trust in him, as her fiance; or that she was trying to want to spend some time with him. Still... at this point, it probably still couldn't really be helped. Both he and Indy had been broadsided with the news of their wedding date so recently, things hadn't really had time to set in, yet. Though.. they would both have to start acting the part a little better.
He could admit he hadn't been as perfectly appropriate around her in the past; he hadn't by any means been the best 'fiance' to her. But then again, he hadn't really taken their betrothal that seriously before. They were at the WEYR for crying out loud, and he'd never anticipated his parents doing something as rash as this. So, in that light, he couldn't blame her for not exactly wanting him to escort her.
Privately though, after that moment of surprise had passed, S'jiro was a bit glad of the opportunity to escape Indylari's notice for a while. He'd have the chance to sneak away with Veyani all the sooner.
Knowing Indy, it would probably take a while for her to change clothes and be made presentable again, so he'd have ample time to enjoy with the woman he really wanted to spend the evening with. And he'd want to spend every moment possible with her while Indylari was away.
Nodding, not wanting to be argumentative with his fiance anyway, the Bronzerider watched Indylari go, before turning back to his table. "I'm going to go see what other drinks they have." Maybe try something from Tillek's vineyards this time. Though Tillek's wines weren't as famed as Benden's, their quality could be overlooked simply due to Benden's general popularity.
"I think I'll go say hi to Tsuki, too, if they'll give her any kind of break."
S'jiro was done eating for now, anyway, and could return to graze as he felt like it.
After having the dessert he'd saved room for.
D'nier
A typical, roguish smile traced there upon the Weyrleader's lips. "You certainly know how best to flatter me. You're not just saying that are you?" He teased her in good humour. Of course, D'nier referred to her implying that HE, naturally, was quite educated on the best wines and had the best taste in them.
Anyway, though D'nier liked to have a drink in hand, why did he need to be inebriated? Wasn't he always charming enough without it? And he could handle his drink pretty well -no small amount of Benden wine was going to make a man like him tipsy, so he didn't often get truly 'drunk'. He was better at nursing a good drink, fully appreciating its flavours, than simply letting himself be overcome by too many.
After all, he couldn't let himself become too uncouth; and he had to maintain a 'present' mind in case the duties of Weyrleader came calling unexpectedly. Because even though Karene was an exemplary Weyrwoman, he wasn't going to let Benden's pride suffer, or his own pride suffer, because he failed to have his wits about him enough to act when circumstance demanded it. It also wasn't fair to Karene. And whatever she thought about him privately, he did like her as a person.
D'nier excused himself, parting ways with Karene so that he could go select their drinks. That brought his attention back to that, just earlier, he thought he'd spotted some suspicious looking activity by the table of non alcoholic drinks. So, figuring he'd grab himself some punch first, the Weyrleader meandered that way.
Nodding to Thanekar where he stood nearby, D'nier had seen him slipping something into his pocket. He hadn't quite caught what it was, though. Still, D'nier's eye was cunning enough to pick up on the boy's possible intention -and there was only one really good way of finding out if he was right.
The Weyrleader picked up a cup to fill it with punch, but offered one at the same time to Thanekar. "Would you like to try some?"
Of course the boy would.
D'nier filled up both their cups, still bearing his customarily sly expression. Then, handing the cup to the boy, he turned his attention back out to the party-goers settling down for their meal.
Just then another man walked up to fill a set of cups of his own, with the punch; but even regardless of what he might expect, D'nier sidestepped so that the man could reach the punch bowl, moving to stand right beside Thanekar.
To the other man, "Yes I hear the punch is quite good."
And when he departed with drinks in hand, the Weyrleader let his voice rise to Thanekar in question, "Have you tried it yet?" He didn't wait for a reply to tip the edge of his own cup to his lips, to see for himself just how it tasted.

| Veyani
Veyani smiled at N'kai's comment. Really she could say something entirely humble and admit it was all the dress but she wasn't sure just anyone could pull this particular dress off. So she had to agree, "I've never worn anything so beautiful before." Not ever. She might never wear anything like it again. She would have to enjoy it while it lasted.
Considering both weavers as friends, she opened her mouth without really asking anyone else if they minded, "I've eaten some." She nodded, "Honestly its too exciting to eat a ton." Unless someone wanted her to vomit while dancing. "There's room at our table, if you need a place to sit. Jezefine is welcome too."
She indicated the table she had just come from which was mainly filled with teenage candidates. "Although, I'm sure its not quite as much fun as sitting with your rider friends." The fact that she had already had two glasses of wine had slipped her mind. "I can't wait for the dancing!" She said in a mixture of wistfulness and excitement. Mostly wistful because she knew it might be a while before she could dance with S'jiro.
Thanekar
Thane was sure the Weyrleader had actually seen him. However, he wasn't going to act like a petulant child. Keeping his cool, he wasn't really as different from his mother in some ways as he might seem. He was self-possessed under pressure. "Thank you, sir." He said, coolly.
He watched as another person came to get some punch and after the man had left, turned his attention back on the cup handed to him by D'nier. Having forgotten his manners momentarily, he lifted the cup to the Weyrleader.
"Cheers, to your health and that of my lovely mother."
Taking a sip of the liquid, knowing how it might taste, after all, he'd been in all kinds of trouble before. It really wasn't that bad. Though it definitely wasn't normal punch. Thane, once more feigning his innocence, said, "Something is wrong with this punch..."

| N'KAI
Truly, he was glad of the offer, but N'kai and Jezefine had their own companions who'd be awaiting their coming to join them. Both the group of weavers he frequently congregated with, and his wingmates. And his wingmates would be highly disappointed if he didn't sit at their table, if only just for a little while -and the best time to catch them together, was now while people were still eating.
"Ah. Thanks, but I think there are those of my Wing who will be awaiting our arrival."
His boyish grin extant, he responded to her excitement, "You should go dance, then. And since you owe me for the dress and all, be sure to save me one for later. I'm sure the music will be going all night."
S'JIRO
If Indylari had left him with any more encouraging thoughts other than that he assumed she didn't approve of their being together any more than during their previous conversations, S'jiro left the table to find Veyani without any regrets.
A glance toward the stage where Harpers played, told him that his sister was still too preoccupied to be able to stop to visit with, so he headed in the direction of the drinks again. On the way, of course, the Bonrzerider looked to the table of Candidates where Veyani should have been found; but... no matter how hard he searched through the faces and costumes there, he couldn't see her anywhere. At least not there.
Attention on where he was going then, S'jiro almost missed it, but just happened to catch the flash of red out of his periphery; at which point, his head jerked about to see if it was she....
Shard it! Too many red dresses.
The Bronzerider made it to the drink stands, pausing for a pleasant smile and 'Good Evening', to the Weyrleader and his company, taking the time to notice that the Weyrleader looked rather natural in his mask of choice, given that the man was generally wearing one anyway. Well... a mask of a sort. S'jiro didn't stop to talk though, seeing as the Weyrleader was already engaged, and he himself was on a secret mission.
Leaning against the bar with an elbow, he shot an order to the barkeep before turning his eyes back out over the crowds, searching for wherever Veyani might be.
D'NIER
Though the Weyrleader spoke only to Thanekar, he paused periodically to nod in acknowledgment of 'hellos', keeping his eyes and posture open and aware, in case of those brief visitations of passers by. So of course, he was always looking pleasant and roguish as always, showing no sign, if there was any, of distaste toward the now alcoholic punch.
"Ah, thank you. And here is to your magnificent mother, and to your health as well." As a Bronzerider passed by, on the way to the bar, the Weyrleader added for his benefit, "To the good health of all."
It was only a moment later, that D'nier found himself amused by the young man's attempts at playing off his involvement with the Spiked drink so cooly. Of course, he didn't see that Thanekar was at all surprised to find that it tasted any different than it should have, and the mere fact that he thought to bring it to the Weyrleader's attention so immediately further tipped D'nier off that Thane had been the culprit. D'nier could taste the alcohol, too.
It was unfortunate though, that one flask of alcohol in a large bowl of punch was hardly enough to make the punch mixed-drink worthy. The percentage of alcohol was now diluted below the point which typically suited his tastes. But, it was for that reason which D'nier said nothing of it, allowing Thanekar to get away with the deviant act. If enough alcohol had been poured into it, that it needed to be removed from the non-alcoholic table, then he would have done so -and gotten Thane in trouble for it.
Lucky for Thanekar, then.
All of that said however, it was still a decent drink to pour a flask into. The flavours were quite complementary of one another.
Eyes turning back down to the boy, he disagreed, "I'm not sure what you mean. The taste is satisfactory. You should finish it up so not to let it go to waste."
Privately, D'nier wondered if Thanekar even liked the taste of alcohol. Many adolescents did not. And if that was the case with him, and he really did think that the punch tasted good now, then it was his punishment, having to stand here and finish the drink with the Weyrleader while keeping a straight face about it. | |

The blonde girl nodded, she had thought as much. N'kai was nice, she hoped they remained friends after she Impressed. She liked Kaisoth too. Musing over that a moment while N'kai spoke of dancing, she sent him a beatific smile. "I promise to save you at least one dance."
Then the Candidate turned to see if she knew anyone to grab to dance with. She looked up to where S'jiro had been sitting for some reason still expecting him to be up there but he and Indylari were missing. Biting her bottom lip for a second, she thought about where they could be and what they could be doing.
More likely they were just dancing. Just dancing, she sighed. It wasn't just anything where S'jiro was concerned. Everything he did with the other woman, meant something to her more than it probably should. It didn't matter that he didn't love Indylari. To say she felt no jealousy would be a lie.
He had in fact come to the masquerade with the other woman. Not that she really blamed Indylari. Half wondering if their families were putting pressure on them, she thought maybe it would be better to let it go, for now. She could almost allow herself to be angry over it but she chose not to be.
Taking a deep breath and trying to get any thought of him touching the other beautiful, more lady-like woman, she decided a glass of wine might not be as bad an idea as it had seemed previously. Looking toward the wine table though, she spotted S'jiro who seemed to be searching.
She tried to walk behind other people so he wouldn't see her right away. What if he had not been looking for her? Then this was going to be embarrassing. "Are you looking for someone? Maybe a beautiful, slender blonde in an amazing fire red gown?" Veyani was smiling at him, because in all honesty she could not help it. Whenever she looked at him, her heart felt like it would jump out of her chest. Even if she knew that was physically impossible.
Thanekar
Totally glad that it wasn't his mother who had caught him, he toasted with D'nier. The Weyrleader was sly though. He knew how to play this out with teenagers, even if Thane was a very young teenager. As people walked by, taking drinks, they must have looked at Thanekar and D'nier like they were sampling too much of the wine already. Though really, this punch stuff was kind of sweet. Not bad at all. It wasn't like wine or ale.
When the Weyrleader said he should drink it up, he thought the man must really not think there is anything in there. Otherwise he would be in trouble right now. All he could think was, thank goodness.
The last thing he needed was to get caught. His mother would keep him from standing again. He refused to allow that to happen. Taking D'nier up on the dare, he downed his drink. Quickly. Yeah, even in the punch, there was that weird aftertaste. "Not my favorite." He said clearing his throat. "I think I'll be drinking water the rest of the evening." He cleared his throat again. Yeah, the punch didn't agree with his throat.
"Well, I've got things to do..." He said as a way of excusing himself. "Enjoy the party." Considering he had just spoken with the Weyrleader like he was a normal person, meant really little to him. However other Candidates or even just boys his age would probably have been in awe. Ones perspective changed when one had a mother with so much power. He was gonna impress Bronze anyway, so it wasn't like they weren't going to be close to equals some day.
Thane went in search of his sister. Mostly so he could bother her in some way. Besides, being her brother, he had to protect her from herself. No doubt she would be with some guy who was much too old for her to be flirting with. Girls. He shook his head. After he was done pestering and protecting her (which honestly should be a paid full time position for a drudge or something), he needed to go and find Jadrek. He couldn't believe the other Candidate had missed this! | |

| S'jiro
The Bronzerider hadn't seen Veyani approach, and had just turned back to the bar counter, about to take his drink in hand, when she spoke up for him to hear.
Just like she, S'jiro had a hard time not feeling his heart race, excited to hear her voice, knowing that Veyani was close to him. So, while his drink was on the glass in front of him, he didn't take it from the counter just yet; instead, he turned a sly, sort of playful grin upon the Candidate.
"Are you able to read everyone's minds, or just my own? And would you like a drink to go with dessert? I hear dessert is already being served."
Finding himself completely amused by their secret way of speaking, S'jiro motioned the barkeep for a second glass, out of courtesy, even though Veyani hadn't yet requested it.
Immediately after though, his eyes were upon her again, not wanting to take them from her. Tonight especially, Veyani looked absolutely exquisite. More fine than any piece of artistic work.
D'nier
The Weyrleader had a hard time containing the volume of his laughter when Thanekar thought to chug the rest of his cup. He must not like the taste, after all.
Water indeed. Well, maybe that would teach him to stay away from the vodka for a few Turns longer.
D'nier simply watched as Thanekar excused himself, obviously not wanting to embarrass himself any further. But seriously, 'things to do?'. The Weyrleader's chuckle rolled with amusement.
Just how old was the boy again, anyway? How much did he really have to do? Well.. the boy had to go have fun, he supposed. And that was plenty.
"You, too."
Tipping back the last of his drink, D'nier was able to take himself to the bar stand then, which had been the real reason for his coming all this way here...
Emerene
Emerene was famished! Though, it would be best not to eat too much on a night like tonight. Emerene totally planned on scoring some dances with all of the most handsome dragonriders.
Okay... well, at least one, anyway. But, one had to set their goals high!
She'd parted ways with a couple of her friends to get some punch, but realized that Thanekar was standing right beside the best-looking drink mix so, in order to avoid her annoying little brother, she did a quick pivot back in the other direction. Luckily, the first thing she saw, was N'kai seating himself at a table -and full of Riders! At least she was guessing by their masks. Several had theirs done up in varying shades of dragon hide-tones which she anticipated meant something to them... and therefore, was a sign.
So, pasting an enthusiastic expression that lit up her big doe-eyes with a sweet, girlish innocence, she hurried over to the Bluerider/ Weaver.
"Kai!" Calling him by his 'common' name was more likely to get her into the circle of acquaintances he had, should they think she knew him well, and was 'cool' with him.
Her happy face beamed all the brighter when she saw Jezefine there beside him, "Oh, Jezefine! You look stunning! Absolutely gorgeous, as always! I assume you made the dress yourself?"
Between friendly hugs of greeting, Emerene literally squeezed herself onto a bench between N'kai and one of the riders in his Wing. Flirting with her eyes, the girl giggled through an apology; of course, her hand came to cover her mouth as she laughed, pardoning herself for the rudeness of the squeeze, and at the same time, she gauged the cuteness level of the man seated there.
Attractiveness level: passable.
Before turning her attention back over to N'kai to her left, Emerene therefore made sure that, from under the table, her thigh pressed against that of the other rider. Maybe he would notice.
"Oh, N'kai, what kind of wine is this? May I try?"
When the Bluerider nodded, but continued in conversation with his wingmates to greet them all, sharing in all their excitement over the Masquerade, and the wonderful food and drink, Emerene slid his glass closer that she could take it and bring it to her lips.
She'd hoped that her question might have sparked some interest from him, but he was too distracted...
"N'kai, why don't you introduce me to your Wing! That's only polite, isn't it?" Her smile of girlish innocence returned, along with that flirtatious energy, Emerene interjected again, "I'm sorry for barging in on the party." Her infectious, perhaps even beautiful laughter chimed through the air.
"I'm just a friend of Kai's. My name is Emerene." Nodding her head in a sort of gracious bow, but never quite lowering her eyes from those across the table from them, she added, "It is a pleasure to meet you all." | |

| Veyani
He seemed to have let go of whatever dark thoughts were bothering him earlier. It was kind of relieving to see him happy because she was so happy to see him and be around him at something as special as a masquerade. If there was any doubt by onlookers as to their relationship, it could probably be seen in the way that she looked at him, that she loved him.
Veyani laughed, "I'm not a mind reader but maybe we were just thinking the same thing at the same time." Which totally supported her claim that they were compatible. "Sure, another drink couldn't hurt." Because at this point she was well on her way to being sloshed at the end of the evening.
"Is it?" She said softly. "I hope you saved room." She stood next to him, setting a hand down where it could touch his. It was difficult for her not to be all over him in situations like this. She would hold onto him in any way she could though. "My appetite for dessert as you know, can be insatiable."
The feeling of his eyes as they seemed to eat up every piece of her, sent a thrill throughout her body. The corners of her mouth lifted in a smirk. Mmm, the sooner they got around to dessert, the better. She didn't think either of them were particularly good at denying themselves their desires.
Thanekar
Ducking out while he had the chance, he wondered if maybe D'nier had let him off the hook on purpose. Well the man had to be chill to live life around his mother. Karene could be so tightly wound sometimes, well he didn't think it was healthy. And as he thought about unhealthy relationships, he thought about his sister's desire to flirt with men ten to twenty turns her senior.
Well, he wasn't going to allow her to humiliate herself. The men might not care about her age, but Thane did because despite being a little asshole some of the time, he did care about his family. It was why he kept such close tabs on the Brat Pack, his siblings were mostly all in the pack.
Thanekar heard his sister before he saw her. Rolling his eyes, he walked toward the table at which his sister was seated along with some older riders. "Sis!" He came up behind her and kissed her cheek. "I'm so glad I found you!" Thane laughed, looking around at the men.
"Why are you sitting here with the old folks?" He asked but quickly covered himself by addressing the riders, "No offense." he stood next to her chair picking up the nearest glass and smelling the contents of the liquid there before setting it back on the table.
With a smirk on his well shaped lips and a genuinely mischievous sparkle in his blue eyes, "I see that daddy complex is really working out for you." | |

| S'jiro
It was hard for the Bronzerider to control his own smile too, while around Veyani. They were indeed quite compatible -only he had no logical excuses as for why that might be. By every calculation, as far as he'd ever been concerned, they shouldn't be. Still, he wasn't complaining.
In any case, just to tempt her, S'jiro removed his hand from under hers and slid the second wine glass in front of her. "For you, beautiful... and I think I know of somewhere a little more quiet we can enjoy dessert, if you prefer that?" And he assumed that she would. Well... either way, he was taking her somewhere more private -he wanted to have as much time as possible alone with her tonight. He didn't care when Indylari might return here looking for him to dance.
The bar tender had pretended not to overhear their little sneaky conversation, making his own assumptions about their secretive innuendos, but when the Bronzerider awaited the young lady's reply, tipping back his glass of wine to finish in one breath, he smiled knowingly before retrieving the empty glass.
Though S'jiro didn't know how many drinks Veyani had already had, but 'another' was okay with him. And he knew that he himself would need that little bit of the wine's influence to knock off the edge of what he was going to put them both through soon. As soon as he left her tonight, S'jiro thought about getting absolutely smashed, because at least on the night of a Masquerade, he'd have the excuse...
Once tonight was done and over though, and he was back with Indylari... he was supposed to be happy.
Giving his glass up to the barkeep, S'jiro took Veyani's hand to lead her away. "Do you want to bring your glass with you?" He only gave her a moment to decide though, because he was already pulling her away, toward the outer edges of the crowd, after ensuring that none who knew them were any the wiser of their movement together. And once at the edges of the room, they could follow the wall until they'd reached the door, and then find their way to his weyr together.
Emerene
Taken off guard by her brother's unannounced visit to the table, Emerene's large eyes revealed the distaste of his being there, emphasizing the feeling vocally as he smooched her cheek. "Thane! Hey, that's Kai's drink! Don't you have any manners?"
The girl reached for the Bluerider's glass to set it back on the table if she could manage to retrieve it from him, but she wasn't going out of her way for it. She wasn't about to lose her dignity in front of an entire Wing of Dragonriders.
"If I did have some sort of complex, it would have worked out nicely, but for your information, I just happen to prefer the company of anyone more mature than you."
That's right. Emerene wasn't about to let her brother embarrass her in front of the WHOLE masquerade with some indiot remark like that. Did he really have to come pester her at a time like this?

She took the glass of wine as a substitute for his hand at that moment. Deciding she would prefer to have his hand than any wine. Seeing as she was already a bit tipsy though, she gave in to the inevitable. And he had called her beautiful which she didn't recall him ever using to describe her before. She got the sense he needed to say something like that to her tonight. The only problem was, she didn't know why.
"Mmmm." She sipped the wine as he finished his. "You have somewhere in mind then?" Veya asked, thinking he planned on taking her away from the party the first chance he got but not because he didn't think she looked nice actually more the opposite. She had yet to deny him anything he asked of her. He should know she would comply with his suggestion they go somewhere quiet.
S'jiro obviously wanted to get out of here as quickly as possible. And she normally might have argued that she wanted a dance first but there was a strange urgency in his desire to get out of the room. To be quite honest, there were too many people in the Weyrhall for it to be comfortable for anyone not used to larger crowds. In her excitement she had not realized just how loud the place had become.
Grinning, she took a gulp of wine before setting the glass down. Keeping her hands free in case they might be needed. Following him out of the Weyrhall, she walked as close to him as she could without causing them to trip. "Its good to be out here where it is more quiet." She realized even more so now how loud it had been around so many people.
Thanekar
Laughing at her reaction. "Apologies sir." He nodded to the blue rider. Although to be honest, he wasn't really that sorry. He would do it again, and probably some time in the near future. His sister was so much fun to tease, especially around mature riders. Turning his attention back on his sister whom he had already begun to rile up satisfactorily.
"Well I don't see how that is fair. These men have to put up with your maturity level. What exactly is the difference?" Had she not just joined the men without an invitation? At least it was how it seemed to him. Maybe as an outsider he had gotten the situation wrong.
"Anyway, none of these men are going to be interested in a tease." Yeah, he heard rumors. He knew enough to know what kind of girl his sister was. Honestly, she could hate him as long as he prevented her from doing something she would regret later. "They came here to have fun and if I'm not mistaken, plan on having more fun after the party. You are much too immature to be hanging out at this table."
Why didn't she want to hang out with the other Candidates? He hadn't been around the Candidates. "Have you tried the punch?" He asked as a way to get her motivated to move. | |

| Emerene
Emerene saw where this was going. She was more mad at Thane than she could remember being in quite some time, and had no idea why he felt the need to open his big mouth and say such mean things like that. The more he went on the less it felt like brotherly teasing and the more it felt like he was trying to outright humiliate her.
Either way, Emerene wasn't going to let him talk to her or her friends like that. She wasn't going to fall to his depth. He might not realize it yet, but she was older and actually a little more mature than him; perhaps more mature than he gave her credit for.
Squeezing out of her seat, she apologized to the riders on either side of her, "I'm sorry," and then once she got to her feet and faced her brother, she fixed the most serious and most stern gaze upon him that she could manage.
She also used an abnormally stern tone of voice, though it was a little curious sounding, being that she wasn't quite sure what had gotten into him, "Thane. I'm not sure what's gotten into you, but N'kai and Jezefine are my friends. If they don't want me here, all they have to do is say so, and I'll find somewhere else to sit. You know less than I do about the kind of company they prefer to keep, and granted that, you have less right being here than I do. I think you should be the first to leave. I have every right to sit with my friends."
Though she hadn't raised her voice to him, it was obvious he'd gotten under her skin, and her expression was slightly miffed when she turned back to the table then to ask, "Anyone else want some drinks? Or punch? I'll go to the bar to fetch them."
There..hopefully now, she could salvage the rest of the evening. She wasn't going to let her brother make a fool out of her.
S'jiro
"Only one place in mind. And it's not here. I'd like for us to be able to enjoy dessert alone for a while..."
Glad that Veyani had put her drink aside, once they were outside the door of the Gather Hall, S'jiro looked back at Veyani, "Are you able to run? We need to hurry, if we're not to get caught." The man's eyes were shining with devious delight that she probably knew him best for.

| ((OOC: Bleh, okay, attempting to resurface here lol Stupid work. We're still picking up the pieces after going live at work. I need a vacation. One coworker had one the week after we went live, and the other one had one the week before we did! Where's mine??)) V'nius had decided against the dress after all. Not entirely because he just couldn't reconcile himself to the idea. Not entirely because he doubted it would draw Sh'nar's attention when he wasn't equipped to properly fill a gown that would attract the bronzerider. Not entirely because he hadn't found one he could picture himself in. No, most of his mind had actually been made up because he'd found something else. Something that suited him far better than skirts would, though some men might have said the garment was just as bad, given how much fabric was involved. The long sleeveless vest was more a cross between a robe and the garment it was meant to be, given its length and the skirt-like way the lower portion moved. The rusty color was complimented by brassy gold edging and a bit of embroidery here and there-- both of which set off the greenrider's skin tone. It didn't hurt that the lack of sleeves and the mostly open front (black toggles held the garment closed near the waist, though the edges angled up in a deep V and the bottom billowed as he walked) showed off the muscle the lanky teen was gaining through training. Black boots and pants completed the ensemble, though they were plain, to leave the focal point on the vest. And Vinnie's wide smile beneath the mask sporting spines and earknobs clearly recognizable as belonging to a dragon. Especially when one finally saw the back of the vest, and the wings hand painted in detail on the garment. It was clear from the way he moved that V'nius was both happy with his choice, as well as excited to go to the party. Despite his misgivings, he was going with his classmates, and he'd have fun with them regardless of what a certain bronzerider thought. Though it wouldn't hurt if he did finally attract Sh'nar's notice… ((OOC: he's wherever the others are! Because my brain doesn't want to be creative on that point...)) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> N'kyr grumbled to himself at J'ace's enthusiasm. The other bronzerider knew parties were not his thing, so he still didn't understand the man's insistence that they go. Orandoth had gotten Ramirath all excited about the event, too, so his bronze wouldn't leave him alone about it either-- a trick J'ace had learned long ago, while they were still in training. And of course, it worked every time, because J'ace completely ignored N'kyr's irritation and knew just what buttons to push to get him to join in on whatever task he was trying to accomplish. For instance, bringing up how a future Weyrleader had to mingle with the others, be present for all the gossip, so he would know what was being said about whom so he wouldn't be surprised when things happened. And so he could keep an eye on his riders, see who they knew, what interpersonal relationships might affect their training and future thread fall flights. The logic, of course, is what convinced him. Even though he knew he'd just been manipulated into joining in on something he'd rather not attend. It still made sense, and he couldn't find a good reason to say no other than he just didn't want to go. So with a final shake of his head, the bronzerider smoothed his vest and pants-- neither of which were new garments. His shirt was, but that had been a necessity-- a certain dragon had torn his old one while they'd been arguing over his attending the party in the first place. N'kyr's only concession to the masquerade was a plain black mask, unadorned by anything. He wasn't going to put the thing on until it was necessary, though-- if it ever was. Because he saw no reason to hide his identity when he wasn't going to flirt with girls or to cause a ruckus, or to do anything else which would be more easily accomplished when no one knew who he was. "If you're that worried, there's no reason to wait for me." Irritable though he was, N'kyr also knew there was no reason for the other bronzerider to complain-- they weren't late by any means. "If you're going to insist on it, then by all means, let's go, so you don't miss anything important." His tone clearly implied he didn't think the Weyrwoman's entrance qualified as such. Nor did anyone else's. ((OOC: feel free to move them along however you wish, Kate…)) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Just a minute!" Tasha called through the door as she struggled with her shoes. It didn't take her but a moment to finally buckle the straps, and then she was patting her hair and moving towards the portal where Lance waited. Whistling in faint surprise, the greenrider couldn't help but grin at her friend when she opened the door. "Well, don't you clean up nice." It wasn't meant as an insult by any means-- but it was clear Tashs was surprised Lance would even be wearing such a thing, given her usual tough girl attitude. The skirt of Tasha's own gown appeared to be made of several layers of some gauzy material, cut in various angular shapes and overlapped in all different ways. The bottom trailing edges were yellow, fading into orange, and on into red as one's gaze climbed higher on her figure. A deep split in the front left most of one leg free, the movement as she walked causing all the layers of fabric to flutter as if they were living flame. The top, a brilliant red, appeared to solely be made of two long strips of material that clasped behind the neck in a halter, leaving clear glimpses of skin between them and her back fully exposed. The slightest concession to modesty was made by the strands of beads that joined the garment at the chest-- though it was more likely they were meant to keep the fabric from gaping too much when the wearer didn't want it to. Or just to draw the eye, and even out the appearance. It was difficult to tell, especially given the wearer was this particular greenrider. The mask she wore could do nothing to hide twinkling eyes, though the red, orange, and yellow feathers on the edges attempted to mimic the fabric of the gown and failed. Then again, the mask hadn't been made by the same hands, and Tasha had only been too happy to find one that went so well with the gown her mother had somehow crafted out of older garments, scarves, and scraps of fabric she'd bartered for and been saving for whatever use she could find for them. "So, shall we?" the greenrider said, offering her arm for Lance to link with her own. ((OOC: To note-- I didn't read any one else's descriptions until _after_ I wrote this!! hahaha! Too many red dresses indeed.)) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Emberlynn had nothing so fancy as many of the others to wear. She'd left most of what she owned behind at the Wild Green when she'd gone in search of her siblings, and hadn't felt the need to retrieve it since arriving at the Weyr and being Searched. What little she needed had been provided, as it was for all Candidates, and she hadn't a single complaint. Things mattered little to her. Clothing mattered little to her. There were a few bits of jewelry she hadn't been able to part with, but… People mattered, though. And Ember had met many since arriving. She loved hearing their stories and enjoyed her chores no matter what they brought, because of the time she got to spend with the weyrfolk. Living at the Weyr was a new experience, though she still felt as if she were only here on borrowed time. Holdless wouldn't be allowed to stay for long, she was sure, no matter what anyone had said so far. Given her easy way with people, the young woman had been offered her choice of garments from a greenrider's closet to borrow for the evening. So she'd chosen something gauzy in a bold pink, with an asymmetric single shoulder strap that tied as if it was the only thing holding the dress up. The rest of the garment was loose and flawy, like flower petals fluttering in the wind, though it did little to hide her curves. Had she been moving around the Dining Cavern, she'd likely have drawn eyes-- and ears through the jangling of the bangles on her arms and the stones dangling from her earlobes-- but as it was, she was enjoying the company of several older gentlemen, flattering them in return for hearing their tales of weyrlinghood and how they tried to outdo each other during training. Mostly to impress the same girl, who shunned each and every one of their advances. ((OOC: she can be wearing a mask, or not, to be more obvious to Bladen?)) ((Also OOC: I'm guessing K'thane is around somewhere, as he'll have to hear of his son spiking the punch... Unless you just want that discussion to come later, Kate )) | |

| Q'rijn, glanced at V'nius when the music started and people began to dance. Would it be awkward if he asked him? Would people think him strange or unnatural? He knew the Weyr was more open about homosexuality but just how open was that? He could feel himself growing tense. In the back of his mind he heard Keadilanth saying he should be himself, no matter who that self happened to be.
Tapping V'nius on the shoulder he asked quietly, so the others would not listen in on their conversation, "What do you think about dancing with men? Do you think we should try?"
---
"You'd think winning a flight would have improved your humor." J'ace said with a shrug of his shoulders. It really wasn't his fault that N'kyr was a prickly cactus butt right now. Apparently getting laid had no lasting effect on him whatsoever. Orandoth thought it should have as well, the Bronze gave his rider the equivalent of a chuckle, rumbling in his weyr at N'kyr's mood. He might be J'ace's friend but he could be a real stick in the mud at times like these.
"Why aren't you wearing your mask?" J'ace said raising an eyebrow. "Oh is it too much to ask to create an image of mystery. Everyone knows you'll be arriving with me or not at all. So do me a favor and put on the mask." He shook his head, really. You'd think, since N'kyr was the son of a Lord Holder he would be used to these kinds of parties.
When they got to the Weyrhall, they had made it just in time to witness the Weyrleaders enter. Unlike N'kyr, he felt it was polite to be there when the Senior Weyrwoman arrived. It was their duty as Bronzeriders to show support. Once the Weyrleaders were settled however, he went on to peruse the collection of women around them.
"Now, what pretty lady should I dance with first..." He mused out loud, catching a few nice figures as they moved around the room. Taking just a moment to scope out the wine, where he saw a very attractive figure in a dress doing just about the same thing he was thinking of doing.
"I'm going to get a drink..." He said, not bothering to offer to fetch one for N'kyr. He'd gotten the other man here as far as he was concerned from this point on N'kyr was on his own.
"Good evening, gorgeous." He said casually to the young woman he had espied from his entry point. J'ace made no point of hiding where his eyes went. He was thinking about all the fun they could have and how having her body pressed against him, would be just the perfect way to start the evening.
----
Lance felt completely unlike herself in the dress and though Tasha's comment was meant as a compliment, she felt a little embarrassed. Well there wasn't much she could do about it, she was already in the gown. This was going to be a long evening of getting stares from people she didn't like and not attracting any attention from someone she did like.
"You look lovely also." Lance said in an easy tone. "Allow me to introduce my brother, Bladen." She added before taking the other woman's arm. Bladen in response bowed slightly and then straightened, taking Lance's other arm.
Bladen was in agreement with his sister that Tasha did look lovely but he did not say as much, in fact he kept pretty quiet until they got to the Weyrhall. Wherein he decided to lead them to his cousins.
"S'dric, Mahyeul." He greeted, with a nod.
Lance smiled at her cousins. "Are you enjoying everything thus far?"
She did not need to introduce Tasha to S'dric but she did feel her other cousin bore introducing. "Tasha this is my cousin, Mahyeul." And she would have been completely focused on them but Bladen was staring at someone, which was odd even for him and rude.
"Something wrong Bladen..."
Bladen still stood there, staring across the room. It didn't matter if she wore a mask or not, he would have known her anywhere. "She is here." The she he was referring to must be the same girl he had told her about previously. And though Lancelle had known about the woman being here, had even interacted with her, she had not told her brother. She thought maybe it would be better if he found out on his own.
"You should probably just stay here with..." She stopped because he was already halfway across the room.
Bladen approached cautiously because he didn't want to make her uncomfortable. "Emberlynn?" He said, with a hint of a question in his voice. She might not want to see him. "Would you like to join me and my friends?" He indicated his cousins, Tasha and Lancelle. He didn't care if she wasn't as well dressed as some of the others, he really didn't even notice. All he noticed was she was there and he was completely awe struck by her once more. She was and would always be the most beautiful woman he had the pleasure of meeting. He offered her his arm, with the hope she would say yes. | |

| Emerene While Emerene still fumed a bit over Thane's indignant behaviour, which she simply could not understand, the maintained enough poise about herself to make it seem as though he'd barely begun to ruffle her feathers. Uhg. What was he thinking, anyway? Taking a deep quiet, deep breath, Emerene went to the bar, and though the bar keep thought she must be quite young to be asking for so many drinks, they were prepared for her. Emerene had merely shot him with a challenging stare and laughed, batting her eyes, "I tease. Really. All of these drinks are for for riders of Empyrean Wing. It would be a waste of steps to have to come back for them." From her periphery, Emerene noticed others returning to the bar as well. She hadn't noticed Bronzerider J'ace, however. With three wine glasses precariously in hand, she was turning to go back to N'kai's table when she bumped into the Bronzerider. Jaw dropping in surprise, the wine in at least one glass managed to slosh over the rim, spilling down the front of her dress; she hadn't caught right away if the same happened to the person in front of her. Without having realized just who she'd nearly run over yet, Emerene started apologizing. "Oh! Oh, my, I'm sooo sorry!" At that point, the girl's eyes lifted to see him, though she couldn't immediately put a name to a face. They did both have their masks on... S'dric & Mahyeul There was silence between the two men as Lance, Bladen and Tasha all joined them at the table. Both the Brownrider and the former guard captain rose to their feet to greet the three. Mahyeul was smiling softly, and S'dric might have, but his attention was dually distracted. Still with conflicted emotions, the Brownrider only had eyes for Tasha, in that moment. Her appearance had rendered him quite speechless, considering the stunning gown she had chosen to wear -which attracted him- but at the same time, in the back of his mind, he could only remember that she'd recently rejected him. Of course, the outcome of a mating flight was not necessarily so simple; but for all of his efforts, and her apparent 'liking' of him -as his cousin so claimed- Tasha had still let someone else win. Sure, flight outcomes were complex, but... they could be determined as much by the human heart aspect, as well as the dragon's need to mate. The entire encounter brought the Rider's desire to the Forefront, too, and if there was any lacking of determination behind that feeling, then it would likely become apparent. Thus, it might be true that Tasha found him attractive, or wanted to see what might become of a more intimate relationship between them, but perhaps that was all there was to it -innocent curiosity. Though, what more could he really expect, when they didn't know one another that well yet. Nevertheless, she'd had her chance... and gave it up for J'ace. Dismissing thoughts over the flight, S'dric managed a belated smile, nodding to his cousins and Tasha in greeting. Bladen was apparently just as taken by his thoughts of a girl, when he turned from them after introductions, and meandered off to speak to a woman that S'dric didn't recognize. Surely he'd be back to join them over food and drink, for conversation; the Brownrider didn't suppose his cousin would just leave them. He'd likely be bringing the young woman back to sit with them. In the mean time, S'dric went to pull out a chair for both ladies -Tasha and Lance. About to have taken his seat again, he inquired after the girls' drink preference. "Either of you prefer something from the bar, tonight?" Mahyeul was quiet, his generally reserved self, as the others went about introductions and S'dric brought chairs out for the girls. He'd never been to an affair quite as lavish as this, so his eyes seemed to sparkle as they took in everything. Officially meeting Tasha for the first time also, had him grinning. He was quite happy to have so many of the family here together like this, when they'd not had the chance for so long. So, even though he'd not voiced the pleasure, the Balan Guard was obviously soaking up the fun. | |

He watched everything unfold but there was nothing he could do about it. His attention was now on the figure in the dress who had sloshed some wine on him. Mmm, maiden curves. Lovely. He was smiling in his usual, charming but oddly mischievous way.
"Don't be." He said in response to her being sorry, as he took the looser glasses from her hands. "I'm not. No one harmed, some spilled wine and meeting a rare beauty. I think I should be thanking you." Leaving the full on in her hand. He turned to the dudges pouring the wine, "See to it, this wine gets delivered to Emperyean Wing."
He turned his attention back to Emerene, "Now why would a beautiful mystery woman like you be getting drinks for men? A gentleman would never allow it. " Not that he was a gentleman, the gleam in his brown eyes suggested he was anything but a gentleman, more like a rogue.
---
Raelestriata
She was watching the dancing start. It didn't take her long to make a decision to wait or be asked to dance. Never one to wait to be asked, the silver clad girl stood up and held her hand out to her best friend. "Nova, c'mon lets dance!" She was beaming with excitement. Other people might read more into her offer but to her she was just dancing with her friend.
At least she assumed that was their relationship. They had a lot of fun together and she couldn't imagine that changing. At least she knew he would be up to the task of dancing with her since they were both extremely active and flexible. | |

| Emerene
It was a good thing then, that a gentleman was not required of him to be; though dragonriderly chivalry was no where near lost on Emerene. In fact, his actions all made her blush. She had to bite her lip to hide the embarrassed little smile there.
It was in those first few seconds, that Emerene realized this man was likely very much a ladies man -so she wouldn't be surprised to find out that he'd bedded many women. However, his words did not sound unnatural, as though he were trying too hard to gain her attention. So was his intention to impress her? Or perhaps he was simply being polite, given the formality of the event?
The man drew even more curiosity and attention, as he ordered refills of the drinks to the Empyrean Wing's table, instead of having her carry them. Who was this man? So polite.
She must have been looking a bit dumbfounded then, as she'd stared through the mask, the flush in her cheeks finally deciding to lessen in intensity.
A mystery woman? Unlikely.
"Mystery woman? I do believe I am not the only one who showed up to the party with a mask on." She said smartly, without giving herself time to think of saying anything else.
"I.. was just trying to escape someone." Emerene finished the words with a soft but coy smile, a similar mischief sparked within her own eyes. Though, the girl certainly could not have matched his own roguish perfection, as inexperienced as she was in comparison.
"Ooh, thank you for having the drinks sent. I guess I need to go clean up." Glancing down to where the wine had spilled down her already deeply red dress, she almost cringed to think about the possibility of the wine stain not coming out. Having to replace the dress would be a terrible upset.
Turning set the goblets back down on the counter, Emerene glanced at his own suit, wondering if it too, would need special cleaning. "Again, I'm so sorry. Let me have the suit cleaned for you, if it's too much trouble." Pausing then, her eyes came back to meet him, and with a slight cant of her head, thought curiously out loud, "You're not from Halcyon Wing, are you?"
Likely everyone at Fort Weyr knew the reputation of those in the Halcyon Wing..and for some reason she seemed to think that he might fit in with such a group. Anyway, there was a 1 in 6 chance that she was right; unless he happened to be a Weyrcrafter she didn't know. ..But chances were much higher of her running into a handsome dragonrider, here. They just so happened to be far greater in number. Lucky for her.
Nova
Even if the Bluerider didn't like her in the way that he did, a dance between friends was a good way to get the dancing started.
Already, several couples had taken to the dance floor, and the weyr harpers had begun playing upbeat music to get everyone on their feet. So, Nova reached to take Raelestriata's hand, taking it as a good sign that she'd ask him at all. Though... he was assuming she wasn't asking him for the same reasons as he was accepting.
Smiling, the Bluerider went with his friend to the floor, speaking to the nosey Ilmattoth as he went, She asked me to dance, Toth! I'll let you know how this turns out.
The young Blue's approving tone entered into Nova's mind just as he and Rae scoped out a spot on the dance square.
You should tell her your feelings tonight. It's a special occasion. Wouldn't she like that?
I'll think about it Was the best answer Nova could manage. It was the only one he usually managed. He always put off telling Rae how deep his feelings truly ran, with regard for her. He didn't want to ruin the friendship that they had -he just wanted their friendship to become even more. And in his defense, he'd 'hinted' a number of times. She just didn't notice, or didn't seem to take him seriously.
In any case, Nova was just glad to be dancing with her at the Masquerade for now. He moved with the beat of the music rather skillfully, and even though he didn't know all the steps of the dance, he made it fun for Rae by simply keeping them moving, guiding her hand through the various motions so that no matter what, they could just keep going. | |

| ((OOC: I can edit, Kate, if he should have noticed more! )) Vinnie swallowed his drink of juice hard at Q'rijn's suggestion. Coming from the usually quiet brownrider, it was a little strange. Not that he hadn't wondered a few times if the other young man might have a crush on T'veli-- it wasn't obvious, but there had been a few times V'nius thought he caught Q'rijn watching their classmate like he, himself, watched Sh'nar. Still, other times, he seemed to be watching the girls in their class more and Vinnie thought he'd imagined anything else. But now… Q'rijn was asking if he wanted to dance? Well, maybe the brownrider was just offering because neither of them had anyone else at the moment. But if he went out there… Would Sh'nar be on the dance floor? Inwardly shaking off the thought-- he was determined to not let it ruin his night if the bronzerider still failed to notice him-- Vinnie bit his lip and eyed the space where several couples were twirling. "I, ah, a fast dance, or a slow one?" A fast dance would probably be okay, right? There would be so many people out there, no one would notice. Right? >>>>>>>>> N'kyr was too much the Lord Holder's son to roll his eyes, though he found himself wanting to do so often in J'ace's company. It wasn't any of the other bronzerider's business what had gone on with the flight and the rider whose green Ramirath had caught. Nor was it any matter he should concern himself with just how N'kyr felt about it afterwards. Though he did hope the other bronzerider wouldn't notice the faintest flush to his cheeks-- and just for that, N'kyr thought the mask might actually serve a purpose if he put it on. "If they know I'll be coming with you, how does it serve the purpose of adding mystery to occasion at all? It won't surprise anyone." Of course, he couldn't slide it into place without complaining, no matter his own reasons for doing so. If anyone noticed when they arrived, N'kyr was completely oblivious to the reactions. He eyed the crowd of party goers with faint disdain-- hidden by the mask, unless anyone was looking close. He supposed he should mingle-- greet the Weyrleaders at least. It would only be proper. Though J'ace's question might have been said for himself, the bronzerider quipped in response, "Are there enough to keep you occupied for the night?" He certainly hoped so-- maybe J'ace wouldn't throw any at him if there weren't enough to go around. Left to his own devices a few moments later, though, N'kyr was at a loss as to keeping himself occupied. Of course he could just leave, but Ramirath was threatening to come block the entrance to the Dining Cavern before he could get back outside if he tried. Knowing his bronze would do just that-- or find another dragon who would if he couldn't actually get there on time-- N'kyr went in search of a drink and a table where he'd be less noticeable. >>>>>>>>> "A pleasure to meet you," Tashamoretta grinned at her friend's brother. She'd heard some about him from Lance, and so wasn't entirely surprised when the young man kept quiet. Tasha was fine with that, anyway, she easily kept the chatter going (even if it was more one-sided) as they headed for the Hall. "Goodness, your family certainly got its share of good genes," Tasha murmured lowly to Lance as she smiled in greeting at S'dric and Mayheul. Still, her interest was mainly in S'dric's reaction to her dress, which in turn disappointed her. He'd stared a little overly long, but then gave nothing but a small smile. Maybe it really had been the flight talking when he'd seemed to want her attention? Shaking off the thought and determined to have fun no matter what, Tasha just smiled in response to his question about drinks. "Something light and fruity for me, please," she told the brownrider, not wanting to overdo it right off the bat. Of course, by the end of the night, she might want something stronger, depending on how things went. Having been a bit oblivious to Lance and Bladen, Tasha finally noticed that the other greenrider wasn't yet sitting down. "Where's he going?" she asked her friend, watching the former guard's trip across the crowded Hall with interest. >>>>>>>>> Ember glanced up at her name, the easy smile she'd offered the older men she'd been conversing with still in place. Her blue-gray eyes widened slightly in surprise at seeing Bladen, though the rest of her expression didn't falter. "Sir Bladen. A pleasure to see you again." Even if it threw her slightly. Not that she'd taken enjoyment in leaving him behind-- she'd simply known there was no future in starting anything with a nice young man like him, not when she was Holdless, and not when her own future was so uncertain. She did have to wonder that there was no censure in his voice-- yet, anyway-- for her having left Fort Sea Hold without even saying good bye. She'd been too excited to be on her way to find her siblings since she'd had a solid lead, and had barely thought of anyone but the tavern's owner and the other workers whom she'd spent the past couple of turns with, and who would be taking over her duties. To see Bladen here, at the Weyr, was certainly unexpected. Though she supposed it shouldn't entirely be, given he did have family members who were riders here at Fort. He must have managed to get some time off to come visit, then, for this particular occasion. "I would be honored to join you, good sir," she finally responded, standing and excusing herself to the gentlemen who'd been entertaining her. "I see you finally decided to allow yourself some time off from work?" she asked the young guardsman as she laid her hand on his arm and started walking with him back to his family. | |

| Q'rijn
"I don't know. What are you comfortable with?" Because Q'rijn wasn't sure what he was comfortable with now. He was never a big dancer, it wasn't like he was a holder, Crafters had celebrations but he wasn't expected to dance and since he wasn't particularly interested in women, he sort of avoided it. Not that he couldn't dance at all, he simply did not feel he would be much good at it. He also had never danced with another man.
"Confession, I've never danced with another guy before." He said softly, so that no one could overhear them. "And I was hoping you'd kind of help me out cause I'd like to ask T'veli later but I don't want to look like an idiot..."
Lancelle
She shrugged, "Must be lucky." Trying not to laugh though she did watch S'dric's reaction to Tasha and found it less than satisfactory. Oh for Faranth's sake...he could at least say something. And next thing she knew her brother was off. "Yeah, the looks but no manners, apparently."
Lance looked around and finally caught sight of R'quiv but he looked like he was busy with another young woman. Ugh. Of course. Well what did she expect? He had no idea she liked him and she had no desire to tell him. It was better this way, she could be bitter on occasions like tonight but she would only be able to blame herself. And she wouldn't be scaring the brownrider off.
"I don't know about you, but I need a drink." She said, about to stalk off to the wine table.
Bladen
He certainly hoped she meant it. Bladen knew how he felt seeing her again. "The pleasure is all mine." He assured her. He wasn't going to allow any handsy riders to come near her when she seemed so out of place. She would be fine with his cousins.
Nodding to the men he was whisking her away from, he said, "Maybe you'll honor me with a dance too?" He asked, eyes dancing with happiness. He wasn't saying they should be together but surely this wasn't simply coincidence. They were meant to be together. She might see that eventually, even if not right now.
"Oh, I'm not on leave." He answered quickly. "I was Searched." He turned the conversation around on the lovely maid, "I had been wondering why you left without a word to anyone though... was it to come to the Weyr?" After he told her he could get them to the Weyr any time. Then she might not have wanted favors from him after she rejected him.
J'ace
"Maybe not but I still have no idea who you are and I have a pretty good idea who most everyone else is. People move differently..." He watched her look him over. Whoever she was, he was very interested in getting to know her a little better. "Whoever is bother you, I can help you avoid." And he would so long as she wanted him to. Of course he would be seeing to it that she wanted him to help her with some other things as well.
When she mentioned the dress he used it as an opportunity to look her over. The small lovely curves of her body were certainly enticing and when he caught the glint of mischief in her eyes, he couldn't help but think he should find a way to keep her around him for the rest of the evening, at the very least.
"You really shouldn't go alone when there is someone after you. May I escort you?" He laughed gently. "No sweet lady, I'll see to it my own suit is cleaned. You needn't worry another moment about it. I'm more concerned with getting you into another dress so that I might perchance have a shot at dancing with you."
He wasn't being too smooth, alright maybe he was laying it on a little thick but he had pre-gamed before heading to the Masquerade. "If I am or not, I'd like to keep a mystery for now. It will make it more fun to guess who we are later."
Raelestriata
When Nova took her hand, she tugged him up from his seat. She was excited and in being excited was likely to be a little more pushy. However she had thought he would be silly not to accept. They were best friends after all and what better way to start the evening than to dance with someone she trusted and cared for so much.
Solieth's comment caught her off guard though, Are you certain that he is only a friend? How would you feel if he was here with someone else?
She was sure, she was so completely sure...that she would tear that bitch's hair out. You're welcome. The green said with a yawn, while making a comment to her blue friend, Ilmattoth, They are hopeless.
Now what was she supposed to do? Oh what if he did like someone else? She'd never really thought about her feelings at all. Solieth had been a baby and they weren't supposed to so she and Nova had been so good at being friends. But if he didn't like her then what? Tonight was definitely not the time to find out.
Raelestriata made one comment though because she really couldn't help herself, "I'm so glad you are here dancing with me."

| V'nius bit his lip, not quite sure how to answer. He wasn't sure which he'd be more comfortable with, honestly-- on the one hand, a slow dance would look strange. And on the other, a fast one might look less strange but would possibly be harder to figure out who should lead when they were both male.
The embarrassment and nervousness at not being able to give a straight answer was soon overridden by a healthy dose of sympathy. Because he apparently hadn't been imagining the looks Q'rijn and been giving T'veli when he thought no one was watching. Or at least it seemed that way-- why else would the brownrider want to dance with their classmate?
"I, ah, haven't either," the greenrider murmured back, equally as quiet. And while he knew it would be awkward, helping Q'rijn out was more important than worrying about the way he, himself, would look out there on the dance floor. "Okay. We'll try it, then." They could stay close to the edge, out of the limelight and hopefully no one would really notice.
Rubbing his sweaty palms off in the skirts of his vest, V'nius nodded decisively. "Okay. Do you know this one?" he asked Q'rijn of the song the harpers had just started to play.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Tasha laughed at Lance's clear irritation at her brother. She nodded towards S'dric, though, at the other greenrider's mention of a drink. "Didn't you hear? S'dric's offered to get us something, if you want to put your order in." She did have to wonder at the shift in her friend's mood, though-- perhaps it was just Bladen's having run off. Or maybe she was just that uncomfortable in the dress she was wearing. Something seemed wrong, though. "Or would you rather we go get them ourselves?"
Tasha certainly wasn't going to object. Especially when S'dric seemed determined to keep her at arm's length.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
"Hmm," Ember mused, noting Bladen's apparently relaxed mood compared to some of the other times she'd seen him, "I will definitely consider it. Though I hope you don't mind trampled toes." Of course, she was lying about stepping on his feet. He probably knew it, too-- or would, if he'd seen her entertaining patrons at the Wild Green with more than just drinks.
Well, well, surprise, surprise. "Searched?" Not that dragonriding didn't seem to run in his family. "I should have known it would take something much more important to pull you away from your duties in the guard. Congratulations, Candidate."
Turning her face away under the guise of grabbing a glass of something off a passing server's tray, Emberlynn considered her words. "I am sorry about that. I didn't deliberately leave without saying anything-- I was in a bit of a hurry and had no real time to do more than speak to the manager of the tavern." The apology in her gaze was genuine, even as she attempted to tell him only partial truth. "My family… travels, you see, and I received word to come find them near Telgar. There was no guarantee they'd still be there if I waited too long, though, so I left with the next caravan." Taking a drink from her glass, she then smiled at him in clear amusement. "The wagon train just happened to be stopping here on the way, and I, too, found myself Searched." Almost as soon as she'd set foot on the Weyr grounds, in fact. | |

| Emerene
Though the girl may have taken the Bronzerider's words as considerate of the fact that she was still wet and needed to have the dress cleaned soon, to keep the fabric from staining, she couldn't help but wonder if what he really meant to say was I'm more interested in getting you out of that dress. Maybe it was the way he looked at her so hungrily...
Either way, disappearing from her brother for a while, sounded like a more than agreeable plan; his being so nosy lately only made her want to avoid him more. Thus, she allowed the masked man to continue assuming that she was being trailed by deplorable company, and accepted his invitation.
"I wouldn't mind an escort at all." Emerene couldn't keep the suddenly shy blush and smile from her face, seeing as they were going to allow their identities to remain a secret for a while longer. How could she resist a sneaky game like this? The prospects seemed all too fun -even if the only goal was avoiding her brother for the time being.
Freeing her hands, Emerene's eyes seemed to light up playfully as she glanced back over the crowds to see if Thane, or anyone of N'kai's table was trying to keep an eye on her just then. And as soon as she felt the coast was clear, without any further warning, Emerene reached to take the masked man's hand, and took off toward the door.
"Let's go!"
Nova
Illmatoth's jaws opened in a draconic laugh, finding the situation ever to his amusement, just as Soleith did. He liked having Soleith as a friend, and thus, wanted for his rider to be able to enjoy Raelestriata as a friend, without holding his feelings back.
Though he felt as though he and his, were generally 'hopeless' in most cases, at least in a comical sense, it was just as amusing to see that Soleith felt about the same way at present, where her own rider was concerned. So, the Blue answered Soleith back, Aren't they, usually? Our humans always make doing what's right for them so difficult. We should be more encouraging of them.
While the dragons spoke between themselves, Nova gulped a little nervously, as their song was ending and a slower tune began to play. But, perhaps a little motivated by the feelings of his draconic counterpart just then, instead of shying from the opportunity, Nova took Rae's hand firmly in his grasp, drawing her closer to him with one hand at her waist, so that they could enjoy a slow dance.
Though the move was a smooth transition between quick and slow pace -Nova hadn't missed a beat- he still half way expected her to say something, and pull away from him.
"I'm glad, too." Honestly, Nova just didn't know what else to say, and he wasn't sure he could hold a full blown conversation while they were dancing... it was also difficult, because Illmatoth had started talking to him, too.
Why don't you tell Raelestriata how much you like her?
S'dric/ Mahyeul
The Brownrider's response to Tasha's drink preference was acknowledged with a more enthusiastic smile. He'd caught the attention of a drudge, so that the drinks could be brought to them, relaying at least, what the two of them would like, though the drudge stuck around to take other drink orders, should there be any.
While the drudge inquired after the preference of others, S'dric spoke up to Tashamoretta, "Did you want to eat first, or dance?" Of course, that was his way of casually inviting her...
After giving the drudge his drink order, the young Guardsman set his eyes back upon Lance. While Mahyeul had little idea that S'dric and Tasha might be a 'thing', he must have subconsciously noticed the Brownriding eyeing her with some distinct interest, but Mahyeul thought to take Lancielle's attention first, figuring that it would be in his best interest to get to visit amoungst family while they were together. He'd had some time to get to know S'dric better anyway, since they were living together presently, so it certainly couldn't hurt to strike things up with Lance during the Masquerade. He thought to ask her for a dance, too. That should be appropriate, shouldn't it?
"Lance, would you like to dance once with me? Though, I am equally as eager to sit and talk with you at length, so that we can get to know one another better. I've really been looking forward to meeting with you all in person, for so long." | |

| Q’rijn
There were so many things to consider but he thought maybe, just maybe he could be brave. That V’nius had acquiesced gave him courage. They could do this. There was nothing wrong with having a preference for the company of men. There was nothing wrong with it at all. He could convince himself of that. The brownrider smiled and took V’nius by the hand.
“We’ll see.” He said, because to be quite honest, he didn’t know any dances. He wasn’t much for dancing before he came to the weyr and since coming he’d been to a few but barely ever partook of dancing with anyone. Probably because the person he wanted to dance with seemed to be too far out of his reach and he had felt ashamed for liking a man. Dancing with a man would be a new thing. V’nius though was more like T’veli in body type so hopefully dancing with him would give him some confidence to ask T’veli.
They stayed on the outside of the dance floor, so as not to draw attention. Q’rijn placed one hand on V’nius’ waist and in his other held his hand. There was nothing to it, he convinced himself. Automatically taking the lead, he hoped he didn’t really mess up.
Bladen
He grinned, “With those tiny feet? I doubt it.” He didn’t remark that she was also quite limber and graceful. Bladen was attempting not to come on too strongly although he was very bad at it. In all honesty he couldn’t keep himself from feeling she somehow would change her mind and begin to see him as the kind of man she could be romantically involved with. He knew he hadn’t stopped smiling since he started talking to her.
“Really?” He said and laughed because he highly doubted she was that sorry for leaving without saying anything to him. Maybe she missed saying goodbye to people she actually knew well though. His brow quirked just slightly. “You were Searched too.” The statement was one of incredulity. So strange that they should both be Searched now. “Congratulations to you as well then.”
He kept his thoughts to himself on the matter. If she was going to be here, at the Weyr, and he was too, he might actually be able to convince her that she should be with him. Although if she were to Impress it might mean it would be some time before they could speak of anything romantic. This might actually work in his favor though because he could take his time, earning her trust, becoming a good friend. Maybe then she would see the depth of his devotion?
As they approached, Lance had already left the small group, but he had noted the way she stalked toward the drinks. Something was bothering her and knowing her she would not want to talk about it. “Candidate Emberlynn may I introduce my cousins, Wingsecond S’dric of Brown Nicath and Guard Mahyeul. This fair lady here is a new family friend, Wingrider Tashamoretta of Green Sionnath.”
Lance
“Umm, no you stay here with these lugs, I’m just gonna go take a moment by the wine.” Hopefully alone. “I’ll take you up on that offer later Mahyeul, I just, I need a moment…” The greenrider looked about ready to implode.
When she saw Bladen approaching with Emberlynn she took it as an opportunity to escape for the wine table. Walking up next to N’kyr, she didn’t really notice the Bronzerider at first, rather more focused on the wine. She took one glass of whichever wine she reached for first and downed it.
If she could just not like anyone, that would be swell. Then she wouldn’t have to worry herself over anyone but her family. She could deal with her own issues without having to be normal for someone else. Not longing for a relationship she wasn’t capable of having, that was all she wanted. It was obviously too late though. She had gotten too close to the Brownrider, had come to trust him and rely on his better judgment. Thank Faranth she had the wits to not allow his brown to win Raidenth.
Looking at the person beside her then, she flushed. “N’kyr? You hiding by the wine too?”
J’ace
Everything was going to go the way he wanted. It made him smile to know that even masked he had the desired effect on women. The playfulness in trying to avoid detection by whomever was bothering the young woman was catching. He laughed as she took his hand and ran for the door. The sooner they were out of there the better it seemed. She wouldn’t hear any complaint from J’ace on that account.
“Lead the way…” He said, still holding her hand. Her hand was soft so she was most definitely not a rider. His guess that she was a Candidate was probably spot on. He’d have to wait and see but for now, he would content himself with the knowledge he was corrupting a young beauty.
Raelestriata
Solieth gave a draconic chuckle Yes, they need encouraging. And mine almost never needs to be encouraged. The green didn’t dwell too long on that thought though it was amusing that her rider who always knew what she wanted was confused and unsure. Now maybe she would know how it felt to not know what one wanted until it was upon one.
When the slow music came, Raelestriata didn’t think Nova would continue, she expected him to stop and let her go but instead he pulled her close to dance properly. As he did so, she felt her body grow warm and a fluttering in her stomach. She didn’t pull away at all, moving with him as smoothly as she could despite her surprise in his decision.
But his response to her words was rather less encouraging. He was just being polite. Was there someone here he would rather be dancing with? Maybe she should let him go after this dance so he could be with whoever he wanted? What was she thinking!? Like she was just going to let him go and dance with someone else and make herself miserable all night. Unless he excused himself, she was going to do her best to keep him to herself.
Solieth was as much help as she could be, reassuring her rider that while Nova was somewhat quiet he had decided to dance with her again when the music had changed. He could easily have left to dance with someone else at that point. | |

| Tasha frowned faintly at Lance's behavior. Something was definitely off, but she wasn't quite sure what. Was it the dress? Or was it something else? The greenrider wished she knew. But she wasn't going to push when it was clear Lancelle wanted to be alone for a moment.
Still puzzled over her friend's departure, Tasha then turned to S'dric. His words had been easy, but she could read nothing in his eyes. Just like with his cousin. Trying for a light tone to match, the greenrider tilted her head to the side as if considering, even as she tried to decide if he was asking her to dance or not. "The dance floor's a little less crowded right now than it will be later. And it's easier to do some of the reels and toss dances on a lighter stomach. So I'd say dance first. Interested in joining me?"
If he said no, she supposed she'd have to ask someone else, or she'd look silly for having said she'd rather dance first. But she was really hoping he'd say yes. Why would he have asked otherwise?
>>>>>>>>>>
Dancing with Q'rijn would be awkward at first, though that was probably to be expected. Vinnie was surprised at how much more relaxed the brownrider seemed, though. The greenrider, himself, was still a bit tense, worried others would decide they were something to be laughed at. Especially those who were classmates, whom he'd tried to hide his preferences from. They wouldn't be so hidden now, would they? But then again, neither would Q'rijn's, since they were on the dance floor together.
Taking a deep breath, V'nius straightened a bit, figuring they'd made it this far-- there was no turning back now. "Okay. I guess it's good we're both wearing boots, in case we step on each other's toes…" The joke was a defense mechanism, though it was also the truth-- he was probably just as likely to step on Q'rijn's toes as the brownrider was to step on his. Hopefully that wouldn't happen too often.
Having danced with his sisters, he also automatically started to take the lead, which resulted in his moving in a different direction from Q'rijn. "Ah… sorry!" he murmured nervously, forcing himself to wait and figure out which way the brownrider was going. Vinnie was the smaller of the two of them, so that would mean he'd have to be the 'girl' for now, right? Or something…
Concentrating as he was on the dance itself, the greenrider at least forgot to worry about what anyone else would think of them.
>>>>>>>>>>
Emberlynn nodded her head graciously even as she could hear the surprise in Bladen's voice at the news that she was Searched as well. It did sound a little strange, especially given the rumors that floated around about pretty young women being 'Searched' simply for their looks. But it was still possible.
Noting how relaxed he seemed, the former barmaid had to wonder if it was the environment, or the company. Here, he'd be able to relax, though she doubted the guardsman mentality would ever truly be gone. Especially not if he Impressed.
Having members of his family around was surely having a positive effect, though, and she gave a friendly smile to each in turn as they were named. "Yet another Guardsman," she commented at the introduction to Mahyeul. "It seems like your family is destined to watch over Pern and keep us all safe." Both from the air and on the ground. "It's a pleasure to meet you all."
Tasha smiled in return at the newcomer, though she couldn't help but wonder if the girl was truly a Candidate. She'd probably been picked up by one of the riders with little actual Search ability and a strong desire to find new playthings. Not that she'd blame anyone if they had-- she just hoped the Candidate had more sense than to let herself be used that way.
"My regards to your dragons, as well," Emberlynn continued. "I would love to meet them if ever the occasion allowed."
>>>>>>>>>>
N'kyr was still nursing the same glass he'd started with, unlike Lancelle. But he hadn't really noticed the way she'd knocked her first back-- he'd been too busy scanning the space for a relatively remote table. Few and far between it seemed they were, though-- it appeared that the entire Weyr and then some was in attendance for this event.
Why had he let J'ace convince him to come, again?
Ignoring Ramirath's excitement and encouragement to mingle (the bronze was almost ready to come barging into the Dining Hall himself if his rider didn't allow him to see some of the costumes through his eyes), he'd been trying to figure out just how long he truly needed to stay, now that he was here. So it was with a bit of surprise that he looked up at a familiar voice… and immediately looked away.
He hardly noticed the greenrider's expression, trying to hide his own as he was. Because despite the time that had lapsed since Raidenth's flight, he still felt awkward about the situation in such close proximity to Lance. Drills were far easier to deal with, and small talk had never been his forte. "No," he replied, taking a larger gulp of his wine than he had up to this point. But then for some reason found the silence too oppressive. "I just haven't found a table yet." It was the truth, after all, even if it did sound stupid. | |
