He looks forward to one day having a family of his own but does not rush his life. Style of Dress: Jahng’s appearance is always clean-shaven and his clothing well-tailored though he’s not particularly fashionable per se. If not simply because of his work, he prefers clothing that is comfortable and somewhat loose fitting. He dons (beige or grey) wide-legged pants and wrap-around tunic with black trim, tall mandarin collar, and long sleeves sewn from a medium-weight brocade. A wide sash belts about his waist along with a long decorative cord of contrasting colour. Covering his wrists, about half way up the forearm, are worn cloth bracers that cover the sleeve hems of his tunic in order to keep them clean while he is working. A dusky blue robe is layered over these, left open without closures and of medium sleeve length, the bottom hem reaching well past his knees. He wears comfortable suede shoes of neutral colour that slip easily on and off his feet.

Possessions usually found on persona:
A broad, crimson Hand fan with spokes made of Pern’s hardwoods, kept tucked under his belt.
✣Bracelet of beads either worn about his left wrist or hung from his belt.

History:
Jang’s Father, Grandfa, Great Grandfa and Great Great Grandfa have all served as Healers for the Fort Hold Family. Every generation has served as a Head Healer to the Holding Family and found great pride in fulfilling that duty to Fort. Jang carries on that honourable tradition by following in their footsteps. His sister also, is studying to be a healer, and suspects she will become a great asset to the people of Fort as well.

In 488. Jang began his apprenticeship at the Healer Hall. His family is fairly well known at the Hall for all their years of service to the Holding family of Fort as well as since most generations have taught at the Healer Hall at some point. This caused him quite a bit of pressure to uphold those high expectations early on, but over the years he learned to cope with such things. He was typically seen as the ‘star student’ of his class at the Healer Hall because of his family’s history there, even though he did not automatically excel as the number one student. It was his diligence and focus that helped him succeed more than anything. After some dabbling in a couple of different specialties and a little help from his family in deciding, Jang finally chose a specialization in Internal Healing. Considering the likeness of his family however, Jang has picked up on many interesting tricks that would accompany various specializations, each of which, in some way, his family felt it was important for him to know.

It was only natural, due to his heritage, that Jang immediately began his journeymanship in 482 at the Fort Hold propper. For a while he argued with his father that he should be able to travel to other parts on Pern and expand on his experience a bit outside of the region, but his family was not agreeable on that note. In their eyes, Jang was better of devoting all of his energy to learning everything he could about the health practices in the region he was in so that he could continue one day as the Head Healer for Fort’s Holding Family, better serving them. He was given the opportunity for several years to serve his Journeymanship in Fort, also traveling to nearby areas for sometimes a turn or two at a time to bring his expertise to the minehold of Fort or to Fort Sea Hold, but he’d always returned to Fort Hold itself after no terribly long length of time.

It was in the midst of his Senior Journeymanship, in 469, that Jang was transferred to Fort Weyr. He has remained at Fort Weyr, in service to the Fort there, since that time. In his time spent there, Jang has worked closely with the Weyrwoman and her children, and even given that his specialty is not strictly Mind Healing, Jang began assisting Weyrwoman Karene through her Junior years to learn to calm her temper and control her moods better. Though he is not sure how long he will be called to serve Fort at their Weyr, Jang assumes that one day, he will be called again to serve at Fort Hold proper once his father retires his post at the Hold in order to teach at the Healer Hall, passing on all of his many turns of knowledge of their craft.

Since his family’s duty has always been to maintain the health and overall well-being of the Holding family, he sees it as his duty also to be able to assist in protecting them from humans who might want to bring them harm. In order to maintain his own physical and mental well-being he has always remained physically fit so has come to enjoy learning more about self-defence using just his hands and the tools around him that are usually close at hand. He is not of the belief that he should ever truly be called to defend the Lord of his hold in that way, but he secretly desires to be prepared since the family’s health is in his charge.

Personality:
Loyal: Because of his family’s long history as healers in the service to Fort, Jang feels a great amount of loyalty toward them, and shares a unique understanding of the Fort Holding family. When he is trasnferred to the Weyr, he carries that loyalty with him, since it was by request of the holding family of Fort.
Soft spoken: Carrying his words in gentle tones, he is also soft spoken in that he does not speak needlessly.
Realist: He is not necessarily ‘philosophical’; his upbringing in a family of healers had made him more of a realist and ‘science’ minded.
Gentle as the rain and strong as the river’s current: Gentle on the surface, Jang is seen by others as a counselor and a healer not just for their physical bodies. He is a man that possesses great strength of Will and determination when life calls for it, which is like the unseen undercurrent of what might otherwise look t be still waters. Jang’s body is also strong, though he is not one to show any outward display of physical force or aggression.
Wise & Knowledgeable: He is a very meditative man, studious and well-trained in his craft. Again, going back to him being a realist, others probably see him as a very thoughtful person, wise beyond his years, but this does not accredit itself to him being a completely philosophical sort. His wisdom flows from his love of life and the craft of healing that he practices.
Respectful of life and authority: Growing up in the Healing Craft, Jang is highly respectful of life. Likewise, growing up in a family that has served Fort Hold for generations, he is highly respectful of those authority figures that have been given power to rule them. This carries over into other aspects of his life, as he also has a deep respect for any level of authority/ ranking and the people that hold titles, respecting the work they have done to attain and maintain their position. He would rather have a positive perspective of people and their position instead of challenging others and disrespecting them.
Compassionate: As a healer, he shows a great deal of concern for his patients. Every one of them is approached with a certain loving care, sometimes seeming almost fatherly. He is attentive to patient needs.
Studious: Jang is ever a student of his craft. Though he may be an accomplished practitioner of the healing arts, he is also always pushing himself to learn new things as he understands better than most (as a healer) how complex the body is.
A good listener/ counselor: Beyond being a Healer of bodies, Jang likes to assume he can help others heal in their minds and spirits. Usually he is very good at simply sitting and listening to others when they need to vent and then, only if they ask for it, he gives his advice on their troubles. Especially since his transfer to the Weyr, Jang has never been involved in the thick of any personal dramas there, and since he is thereby seen as a more neutral character and otherwise uninvolved, patients have been quick to come to him for more than physical needs.
Always calm: Even if his eyes speak otherwise, Jang is always like the calm over the surface of the water. Quiet and peaceful outwardly, yes, even a bit stoic in that sense. In almost every situation, he is of a level-headed, reasonable approach to things.

Shortcomings:
Perhaps a bit too passive; even in the defense of himself, he has a difficult time speaking out or taking action, so others usually perceive him as either weak in body or weak in conviction, or perhaps believe he believes in nothing at all strongly enough to fight for.
Since he’s soft spoken and tends to see himself as a counselor of health to others, he has a hard time making friends outside of his colleagues whom he works with on a daily basis in the infirmary; he also typically keeps himself busy enough with purpose enough that he doesn’t deviate from his typical daily routine enough to give him cause to be around people outside that circle of colleagues;

Mannerisms/ Habits:
Fanning himself, his left arm always crossed behind his back in a reserved manner..

Skills/ Likes:
[Music]:Music is healing, in his mind, so he appreciates music in all its forms.
[Healing Studies]: Most of all, he likes plants and enjoys making the concoctions of medicines that are used in treating and preventing illness. He is always pouring over a book or scroll and often found in a garden or in his office working over some brew of medicine.

Unskilled at/ Dislikes:
[Underhandedness]: Dishonesty doesn’t bother him as much as people who use underhanded methods to get what they want.
[Greed]: Regard gold and Marks like stone.

Fighting Style/ Weapon of Choice:
He is opposed to using blades because they’re too sinister for someone with as gentle a heart as he; they’re also more difficult to have to stitch back up. His skill in hand-to-hand combat and the use of his fan as a tool to cause injury is only mediocre but he finds that sufficient enough. More than that however, he focuses on being able to deflect attacks or disarm attackers rather than inflict damage since he’d rather not have to see those people in the infirmary later.

I should think the specializations are similar to Earth. He should focus on a specific part of the body or a specific type of patient.

Mind Healers are also talked about, which would be more like Psychologists/Psychiatrists.

Read this and see if anything jumps out at you. Obviously Pern is behind the times of today on Earth but you might be able to find something you can alter a little and have it work for our purposes.

http://www.altabatessummit.org/physicians/physician_specialty_definitions.html

Once you have chosen a specialty for him, you need to add it to the history and explain why he chose that as his specialty. What made this appealing to him?

Also what age are we planning on people being able to become Masters? He just seems a bit young to me, to be a master of his craft. But if its normal on our Pern thats fine. Smile

Otherwise he looks good to me.
